A crazed scientist is experimenting with a rage virus on innocent victims in a" lab" in the woods. When one of his monstrous subjects escapes and vultures devour his remains, they became mutations seeking to feed on humans. A group of young adults is caught in the horror when they wreck their vehicle and are trapped in the woods.
The good news for horror fans is that this film is loaded with guts and violence. There are a lot of crazy kills and the movie is pretty blood soaked from the first frame until the last. Also, there is a pretty crazy cast of characters. I especially liked seeing Reggie Bannister, from one of my all-time faves Phantasm (he even drops a nod to that movie). Unfortunately, that's really about all the good I have to say.
The plot is really cliche'. I found the acting horrible and the dialogue just plain bad. But, the topper for me, the special effects are just so bad it's tough to really get into it. The killer vultures just look laughable and most of the violence is cartoonish. When the vultures aren't GCI they're actually puppets in close-ups. Really bad puppets, almost like sock puppets. Even when the group is driving their RV through the woods, on the internal shots, the woods passing by outside the window just look out of sync and bad. There also is just never any development of the characters to get you involved so you can later root for them. They're all cardboard.
Having said all that, I realize it's a B-movie, and as such a lot of silliness is probably intentional as to make it campyy. Personally though, I found this just barely a step above the usual Saturday night Sci-Fi Network fare. I'm sure with the level of excessive gore it will find a fans, and there is some fun to be had. But overall, it just didn't work for me. Maybe I was just expecting too much substance.
