Based on the Stephen King short story, it's about a man who specializes in debunking paranormal occurrences (John Cusack) and checks into the fabled room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel. Soon after settling in, he confronts genuine terror.
First off, John Cusack is one of my favorite actors of all-time. I've loved the guy since the 80s stuff like Say Anything and Better Off Dead. This is a different sort of role for him though, as he's a cynical, moody writer that's suffered a tragedy of his own. The movie is a one-man show for the most part.
It's a horror movie but also it's not as much into the gore like a lot of movies as of late, but more psychological horror. It's both smart and spooky and does a great job of building dread. It's a very claustrophobic film too once he's in the room and the door shuts... you're locked in there with him for most of the rest of the movie.
After about the 1 hour mark in the movie though, I think it loses some steam and relies a bit too much on the whole "is it real or not" type set-up. It's been done to death in horror movies of late and I think it brought the film down a bit.
But I still think this is one of the best Stephen King adaptions in years.
7/10
