Info Post

Nick Hume (Kevin Bacon) is a mild-mannered executive with a perfect life, until one gruesome night his oldest son is murdered. Transformed by grief, Hume becomes obsessed with revenge on the killer, which starts a war with his gang.

Let me sum this movie up... a lot of folks shoot and stab each other. Seriously, that's about all there is to this film. It feels like a b-movie almost. A lot of movies have used this same basic plot... from Charles Bronson's Death Wish to Jodie Foster's recent film The Brave One. But having said all that... I sorta liked it.

So what did you expect really? I mean after all, it's from the author of Death Wish and the director of several of the Saw movies, James Wan. He really puts you in the middle of the action and Kevin Bacon is excellent as you watch him go from a "fortune 500" dad to someone no better than the killers he's after. It is sort of tough to buy this guy manhandling some of the bad guys at several points, but I never said it was realistic. There are several good suspenseful moments and a lot of emotion. And blood. There is a lot of blood. There's no real social context involved I guess, unless the statement they're trying to make is that retribution is fun (and messy) to watch.

It's one man vs one gang. It's implausible, goofy and extremely over-the-top.

But it's sort of cool.
