The arrival of a newborn girl causes the gradual disintegration of the Cairn family; particularly for 9-year-old Joshua, an eccentric boy whose proper upbringing and refined tastes both take a sinister turn.
The main thing this film relies on is a sense of mounting dread. It may seem slow to those who like their horror or terror to come with blood and gore, but it's a pretty smart movie with a lot of tension. It's scary in the sense that what if your kid was a hollow shell, lacking emotion, and you suspected he was a tad bit on the evil side?
Nothing supernatural occurs in the film at all, but it's still a bit hard not to compare it to The Omen, with a touch of The Bad Seed. It's that type of "creepy kid" movie.
Overall it's an intriguing film with a lot of psychological thrills that's well acted from everyone involved really. It's not an in-your-face horror film, but a drama that creeps up on you and has a very eerie vibe.
Nothing outstanding, but it does a decent job of being a poor-man's Hitchcock film.
