In this documentary from HBO Films, unordained and controversial evangelical minister Justin Fatica and his Hard As Nails Ministry promote the gospel to all Christian faiths and reach out to the MTV generation.
I found this a pretty interesting approach that Justin Fatica takes, but it's obviously not for everyone. I really can't see it as that controversial though, he just has some different ideals as to what it takes to reach these kids, and reach a lot of them is exactly what he does.
He's extremely energetic and charismatic, while doing everything from having a kid blast him in the back with a metal folding chair like he's Hulk Hogan (while yelling "Jesus Loves You") to calling a girl fat. He plays hip-hop (non-secular only), wears pro sports jerseys and is a bit intense and in-your-face... but he's successful. He stages simulated student re-enactments of the Crucifixion, featuring a life-size cross, large nails and shouting at the kids dragging them up hills.
Despite his success, he faces some serious resistance - even from his own beloved Catholic Church. But the film concentrates more on Justin and his background while really just skimming over the opposition to him, which I'd liked to have seen more of actually. I'd also have liked to know a lot more about his background and history as the scenes with his parents were interesting but I felt we were only getting part of that story. They were very material (and rich) and it seemed like they were sort of against what he was doing.
Still though, I think it's a pretty interesting and enlightening documentary on evangelism and worth a watch, but could have been better.
5.5/10
